Aed Energy joins the Zero Emission Generator (ZE-Gen) Technology Accelerator
Aug 25, 2024
London, 25 July 2024 - We're excited to announce that Aed Energy has been selected among twenty projects aiming to advance reliable, cost-effective renewable energy-based alternatives to fossil-fueled generators in the Philippines and Nigeria, as part of the first phase of the Zero Emission Generators (ZE-Gen) Technology Accelerator.
ZE-Gen is a collaborative initiative led by The Carbon Trust and Innovate UK, with support from the IKEA Foundation and UK aid through the UK Government’s Ayrton Fund. Launched at COP27 with an initial commitment of over £19 million and an ambition to scale to £100 million, ZE-Gen is designed to tackle barriers, accelerate innovation and fund activities to build a thriving, competitive market for renewable alternatives to fossil-fuelled generators.
Of the estimated 25 million fossil-fueled generators used worldwide, three million are in Nigeria and one million in the Philippines, costing billions annually in expensive fossil fuel consumption. In Nigeria alone, daily diesel consumption averages 14 million litres due to unreliable on-grid power, with Nigerians spending over N1 trillion (2.2 billion USD) in Q2 2023 alone, according to the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Agency (NMDPRA). Despite their critical function, the unsubsidised cost of electricity from diesel generators can exceed $400 per megawatt hour (MWh), placing significant economic strain on dependent regions.
Our project aims to demonstrate a low-cost, clean, and reliable alternative: modular energy storage technology paired with intermittent renewable energy in a deployable configuration. At commercial scale, Aed Energy’s transformative solid-state engine delivers up to 100 hours of stored energy using very low-cost, abundant materials. The ultimate goal is to achieve an affordable roundtrip levelised cost of electricity (LCOE) under $100 per MWh.
We’re looking forward to working with our partners in Nigeria and advancing our mission to accelerate access to affordable, clean energy worldwide.
